The RM Williams Story
RM Williams was a Jack of all trades and also a master of them as well. RM Williams was the quintessential Aussie all-rounder was a bushman, camel boy, bricklayer, businessman, tea grower in New Guinea, builder, horse breeder, grazier, explorer, miner, tycoon, raconteur, well sinker, stockman, avid reader, author, drover and the list could go on. RM was born in1908, he grew up quickly and from an early age learnt to handle horses on his father's property at Belalie. He left school early at age 14 but became an avid reader, including the works of Tolstoy.
After leaving home to see the world he took on jobs wherever they were available, and learnt numerous skills in his travels including:
- Building while helping build a church in Victoria
- He learnt to handle camels from Afghan cameleers and worked as a camel boy traveling between Western Australia and Oodnadatta
- He worked as a Dingo scalper
- Sunk Wells
And
Helped establish a mission on the Western Australian Goldfeilds where he learnt a number of skills from the indigenous people in particular their bushcraft, cutting mulga, burning limestone, how to find water and track animals. He was later quoted as saying “The mastery of these Aborigines over their environment has been the inspiration of my life”
Whilst working sinking wells in the Northern Flinders Ranges RM Williams met a man they called “Dollar Mick” Mick knew how to make pack saddles and with RM perfected the art of boot making with a single piece of leather. They worked from a pattern cut out from a kerosene tin. Later RM described dollar Mick saying. 'Mick was better at stitching than himself. For two years we entertained travelers with our products and our camp fire was a meeting place for people from far and near. Dollar and I remained friends for life'
In the North life was Hard for RM, his wife Thelma and there young family, they endured many challenges including harsh dust storms and unbearable sand. All the while surviving mostly on Rabbit and Kangaroo meat.
During the early 1930s RM returned to Adelaide for work. He had been employed for a short time at Sidney Kidman's Eringa Station. In 1934 he opened a workshop at 5 Percy Street Prospect, Adelaide. His remarkable skills of boot making and leatherwork would now reach there full potential. The business soon developed into a huge concern, now supplying not only the Australian market it also exported its merchandise overseas. Sending boots and other articles to England, USA, Europe, Canada, Falklands Islands and Indonesia. With clientele including the King of Nepal and former US President Bill Clinton.
Apart from his successful business RM Williams also delved into mining at Tenant Creek, in 15 years this mine produced 80 Million Pounds worth of Gold! It’s said that RM 'used to stagger down the street to the bank with the bags of gold, a shotgun on each side'.
RM Williams wrote several books, including:
- The Bushman's Handcrafts, in 1943, which was reprinted 15 times.
- Saddle for a Throne in 1952 and
- Beneath Whose Hands in 1984. This is 'a history of my many failures and my few successes, and having had both I have learnt some wisdom'.
- I Once Met A Man in 1989,
- A Song of the Desert in 1998
- Australian Bush Classics in 2001 and
- Animal Stories in 2002
